"The Journey," by Douglas Whiting can be read with great love and respect and hope for your enjoyment. This time with complete endorsement, authorization, and  permission from the author.

We did not pay anyone for use of the opening music from Cake ("Wheels," off of "Pressure Chief") or the close music either: Spin Doctors "More Than She Knows," too. Mr. Scruff is still waiting for his check, too. The close music is his song "Kalimba." We will share when there is something to share.

Hawthorne Planning Commision - Walmart Protest

Hawthorne Planning Commision:

Thank you for attending our protest of the Walmart on Inglewood this morning. Your enthusiastic response certainly contributed to a surprisingly strong push-back from the community at large. Mr. Cole's full-throated profanity barrage was really the icing on the cake.

Your public service is commendable and appreciated. We all want a thriving, healthy community. And it does not just take care of itself. Thank you so much for your hard work. It is regretable that we seem to be on opposite sides of this issue, but this will happen. Lively debate and civil disagreement is our best tool in the long run.

Curious, though, your presentation regarding incarcerating protestors. I would think a fine citizen and business leader like yourself would encourage and nurture an active and informed citizenry. I am sure you are working hard to make and keep Hawthorne the fine example of industry and citizenship that it is.

Thankfully we live in a free society where dissent is not stamped out like in Syria, Myanmar, and mainland China. Tiananmen Square could not happen here, because the foundation of the society we all work to protect nurtures the right to dissent and voice views even when they conflict with the economic status quo, and the often powerful forces of business. (Perhaps you were misquoted. I don't think threatening protestors with jail is SOP for this or any other municipality, though. You may want to check your charter. Just a thought.)

Since we are a small group and just beginning to have a presence in social and economic local issues, we keep  our expectations low for all events. It is always a "building year" for us and we are determined to be determined, however silent our neighbors may be, and how quixotic our efforts. We will keep going after the dragons!

**************

Today, most of the traffic along Inglewood and into the Walmart parking lot was indifferent to our signs and presence, as expected. A few glances, a little slowing along the turn, but mostly nothing. Then a few USC students strolled by and took a few images as well as voicing their support, interest, and curiosity.

More honks from passing cars, and more "good for you!"s from a few passing drivers.

We thought that the day was done and the impact small, when your representative rolled up and engaged us.

Mr. Cole's full-throated profanity barrage was really the icing on our protest cake.

Thank you again. Certainly a contestation such as this should be continued to its fruition.

Sincerely,

Douglas Whiting

Hawthorne, CA Walmart protest 8/9/13 - 11 am

Hawthorne, CA Walmart protest 8/9/13 - 11 am

Feel free to join in, or honk support. We will be broadcasting live on Blog Talk Radio show, Hard Work Hour with Douglas Douglas. Archived on Blogger at Hard Work Hour with Douglas Douglas, too.

Right next to the Del Taco in between Marine and Rosecrans on Inglewood Boulevard in beautiful Hawthorne, California. This town is growing, adapting, and dealing with 21st century economic realities and we don't need Walmart at all! Every single thing they sell here is available at a competing local business which is suffering under the competitive weight of gargantuan Walmart's unwanted presence.

Feel free, too, to let your elected representatives know what you think about your community and Walmart's history of killing local businesses. Links below may help some.

Archived on Blogger at Hard Work Hour with Douglas Douglas, too.

Namaste, people! And get back to work!

  • Cheryl Williamson Isn't it "funny" that companies can put up cameras to spy on their own workers and even fire them because they talk to each other... I wonder, How much do the camera's cost?? versus cleaning out air ducts, putting in better ventilation, have good drinking water, just an overall Healthier work place.... Walmart is a big Lie!! When it first got here in America, they were suppose to sell only American made products, Can't find anything American made there... So think about all of those Pesticides, Germicides, and every other chemical's that may have or should have been sprayed on to these products. Not to mention, truck and forklift fumes...These companies know you are poor and can't hire Lawyers They do NOT want people to band together, People have forgotten how hard it was and how hard it was for the unions to fight for better working conditions.... It looks like Walmart is dragging it all backwards.

  • Douglas John Douglas Yes, CW, I think the union angle is my godson's point of attack. I am more concerned with it being shortsighted from a consumer point of view. Walmart saves us a few bucks, and we can purchase many things in one location, but it undercuts all the competition, which are our friends and neighbors from our community. Then they charge whatever they like. I want the Walmart clients to consider that saving a few dollars may not be serving their best interests.

  • Douglas John Douglas Also important to both of us, is the "injustice factor." The reality that our money from the Walmart registers is going into the already vast, almost incalculable wealth of the top ten heirs to Sam Walton. So far, I am unimpressed with their money management skills. I think a little more "Bill Gates Style" philanthropy might keep the picket sign out of my hands.

4)  "Raider Nation"

I am a Raider fan. Do you care? What effect does this have on your perception of me?
Do I seem more violent? Dangerous? Menacing? Unhinged?

It's true. The Raiders have built a reputation for mayhem and chaos amongst their players
and fans. But is it accurate? I just met a couple of Al's Pals who seem to have both
oars in the water. They have raised two apparently wonderful young adults from pre-
conception to near-maturity, but because they live in the Bay Area, their football  team is -
          - of course -- the Raiders.

I even get to help watch one of their progeny as they deliver the other one to ASU for
further training. I will do a little digging and see if they are as crazy as the rest of the world
          thinks they are.

As for me, for the first time in years, I am excited about the upcoming football season.
Updates to follow. What could go wrong?
